Meet Alan
Alan Morehouse graduated from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, where he studied industrial design, fine art and architecture. He is a Design/Builder of Fine Homes on the Outer Cape towns of Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. His Custom Design/Build Homes often reflect features of the natural beauty inherent in this extraordinary Coastal Region.
As a Sculptor, Alan's fine art works are created in exotic woods, bronze and mixed media. These works reveal a sensuousness of form that impels the viewer to reach out and touch. His works are often non-specific representations of natural species, inspirations and expressions of insights which are universal in nature.
"When I carve and shape my work, I emphasize the sculpture's movement in negative space and it's interaction with the environment. This approach is inspired by an awareness of the natural world in the sculptural sense, an awareness of the inseparable interplay between positive and negative space. Like the black and white of the Yin & Yang symbol, we are inextricably bound to mother nature, parts of the same whole."
Alan moved to Cape Cod, MA in 1971 to live in closer contact with the natural environment. He early developed an appreciation for the marine mammals as important members of our shared destiny. His work reflects a growing awareness of this life in and around the seashore.
"We no longer see the environment and animals exclusively as resources to be exploited. We view animals like the marine mammals as our fellow living creatures, and the earth as our shared home. The comeback of the humpback and preservation of right whales, however slow, shows that we have begun to take in earnest our responsibilities as stewards of the planet."
Through his spiritual connection with the earth and all of its creatures, Alan strives in his art to encourage an earnest responsibility for the stewardship of our planet. He has shown at many galleries in New York and on Cape Cod since the 1970's.
